Paul Mason, once recognized as the world’s heaviest man at 980 lbs (444 kg), lost over 640 lbs (290 kg) following life-saving gastric bypass surgery in 2010.
The English-born man’s weight loss journey significantly reduced his size, allowing him to regain mobility, but required major surgeries to remove 34–45 kg of excess skin in 2015.
Key Details of Paul Mason’s Weight Loss:
Initial Weight: At his peak, Mason weighed 980 lbs (70 st / 444.5 kg).
Surgery: He underwent NHS-funded gastric bypass surgery in 2010 after waiting 10 years for approval.
Weight Loss Amount: He lost over 644 lbs (approx. 292 kg).
Post-Surgery Life: In 2015, he had extensive skin removal surgeries in New York to manage the remaining 75-99 lbs of excess skin.
Subsequent Challenges: Following a move to the U.S. and a failed relationship, Mason regained some weight, reported at around 38st (532 lbs / 241 kg) in 2019, and planned a return to the UK for further support.
Despite the challenges, Mason’s case was a significant, well-documented example of massive, medically-assisted weight loss.
