Anne Hathaway expected at least a few people in the audience to know the story behind her new movie.
Instead, she got complete silence.
During her April 29, 2024 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Hathaway was promoting The Idea of You, the movie based on Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel. While explaining how Nicholas Galitzine was chosen for his role, Hathaway suddenly turned toward the audience and asked:
“Has anybody here read the book?”
Nothing.
The audience remained completely silent.
Hathaway immediately realized what had happened and covered her face while laughing. Jimmy Fallon jumped in to save the moment, joking that The Tonight Show audience doesn’t read books and suggesting that Stephen Colbert’s audience might be a better place to find readers.
Hathaway played along with the joke, eventually asking:
“What’s a book?”
The unexpected exchange quickly spread across social media, with viewers sharing the awkward-but-hilarious moment from the interview.
But the story didn’t end there.
A few days later, Hathaway had her own response to the audience. After the novel behind The Idea of You reached No. 1 on the bestseller list, she jokingly posted about the achievement and tagged Jimmy Fallon, turning the embarrassing moment into an even better punchline.
What started as an uncomfortable few seconds on live television ended up becoming one of the most memorable celebrity moments from The Tonight Show that year.
And honestly… Anne Hathaway handled it like a pro.
