A Portland woman who had both ch*st removed after two one-hour Zoom calls with therapists has won a reported $3.5 million settlement — and the providers who approved her surgery never even met her in person.

Camille Kiefel, 36, underwent a double mastectmy in 2020 after identifying as nonbinary. Within two years, she detransitioned. The surgery hadn’t resolved her underlying mntal halth struggles — it had added to them. She now lives with vertigo, Raynaud’s syndrome, permanent scars, and says she will never be able to brastfeed.

Her lawsuit accused two Oregon therapists of rubber-stamping the irreversible procedure without a proper mntal halth evaluation, despite her documented history of trauma, depression, PTSD, and su*cidal ideation. The case settled days before it was due to go to trial.

“I wasn’t given true informed consent,” Kiefel said. “And that’s something that everyone deserves for any medical procedure.”

She is one of nearly 30 people to have sued healthcare providers over g*nder-related procedures in the last four years.
