Darrell “Plant” Thomas dedicated 58 years to serving Detroit’s east side. He successfully established a car wash, competed professionally in the NHRA, and was widely regarded as a living legend within his community.

His life was subsequently impacted by Alzheimer’s disease.

Prior to the full progression of his illness, he expressed a final desire: to distribute funds to his community from a helicopter, a final gesture of generosity from an individual renowned for his continuous contributions.

On June 27, 2025, coinciding with his funeral, his sons fulfilled this wish.

At precisely 1:27 PM, a helicopter ascended over Gratiot Avenue and Connor Street in East Detroit, directly above the car wash he personally constructed. Subsequently, $5,000 in $20 bills, accompanied by rose petals and prayer cards, were dispersed over the streets below.

Traffic across six lanes ceased entirely. Individuals exited their vehicles, and strangers collaboratively and joyfully collected the falling items. No conflicts or disagreements were reported.

A witness described the event as “truly beautiful,” noting that “everyone received a portion.”

His son, Smoke, observed from the crowd, stating, “He was a legend within his community and he blessed everyone — and this was his final blessing to everyone. That is all it was.”

The legacy of Plant endures.

He was a man who, even posthumously, found a means to provide for the people he cherished.
