A Father Tried Everything To Help His Son — What Finally Worked Shocked Everyone

Mason McDeid, now in his mid-20s, was born premature at 31 weeks with severe cerebral palsy. He cannot walk or speak and needs round-the-clock care from his family.

As a toddler, he cried almost all the time and was very difficult to comfort. One day his father Richard played Metallica’s “Binge and Purge” VHS tape while doing dishes. Mason suddenly stopped crying and fell asleep on his own for the first time.

After that, music became a calming force in his life, starting with Metallica and then other bands. He later developed a deep love for live concerts and heavy metal music. He has attended more than 1,200 band performances, including Metallica eight times. His list of shows also includes Iron Maiden, Slipknot, Slayer, and AC/DC.

At a Korn festival, the crowd made space for his wheelchair, and security lifted him to the front row. His father Richard later created Mason MetalFest, a special needs metal festival. It is described as one of the first festivals of its kind for disabled music fans. Mason won Best Show of the Year at the Minnesota Metal Awards.

His story is often shared as a powerful example of how music can change lives. For Mason, music is not just entertainment but a way to communicate feelings and find peace. His journey continues to inspire many families dealing with cerebral palsy and severe disabilities. Today he still attends shows with his father whenever possible and remains a beloved figure in the metal community. His story highlights strength, love, and the power of music.
