At just 8 weeks old, a tiny shelter puppy named Burreaux had already survived more than most dogs ever should.
The little puppy from Louisiana battled and overcame parvovirus, a deadly illness that often kills young dogs before they ever get a chance at life. After surviving the disease, Burreaux and his brother Joe were placed in a shelter and began waiting for someone to adopt them.
Joe quickly found a family thanks to his energetic and playful personality.
But Burreaux was different.
Whenever someone spoke to him softly or gave him attention, he would flash an unusual expression — a huge, human-like grin showing all of his tiny teeth. Shelter workers couldn’t believe it.
The adorable smile instantly became his signature.
Staff members eventually posted a video of Burreaux smiling online, and the internet completely fell in love with him. The video exploded across social media, collecting hundreds of thousands of views in just days.
One of the people who saw the clip was a woman named Hollie King.
The moment she saw Burreaux’s strange little smile, she said she felt an immediate connection and knew she had to meet him. Soon after, she officially adopted him and renamed him “Pappy.”
But after arriving at his new home, something unexpected happened.
The famous smile disappeared.
Despite all the love, comfort, and attention in his new environment, Pappy has reportedly never smiled the same way again.
“His smile was the primary factor that influenced our decision to adopt him,” Hollie explained. “To date, he has not smiled once. Nevertheless, he is an exceptionally sweet companion.”
Some people online joked that the puppy “smiled his way out of the shelter” and then retired from the job once he found his forever home.
Others believe the smile may have been connected to nervousness or stress during his shelter days.
Either way, Pappy’s unforgettable grin changed his life forever — and helped him find the loving family he was waiting for all along.
