The kitchen smelled like exhaustion disguised as effort.

Roasting meat.
Boiling potatoes.
Fresh bread.
And underneath it all, the sharp pressure of a woman pushing herself too far.

At seven months pregnant, Clara had been cooking since sunrise for her husband David’s entire family on Easter Sunday.

The house was technically hers — bought years before the marriage with her own money — yet somehow she moved through it like a guest trying to earn permission to exist.

Every time she slowed down to catch her breath, her mother-in-law Eleanor appeared beside her with another criticism.

“Pregnancy is not an illness,” Eleanor snapped while inspecting the food. “Women today are too soft.”

Clara gripped the kitchen counter quietly as pain tightened across her lower back.

She looked toward the living room, hoping David would say something.

Anything.

Instead, he laughed casually from the couch.

“You should listen to my mother,” he called out. “She knows better than you.”

The room erupted in small approving chuckles from relatives.
