In 2021, a bizarre late-night mistake turned into one of the internet’s strangest viral stories after a woman from Boston accidentally swallowed her AirPod instead of an ibuprofen tablet.
Carli Bellmer said she was exhausted and getting ready for bed when she climbed under the covers holding two things in her hands: an 800mg ibuprofen pill and her left Apple AirPod. In the dark, half-asleep and barely paying attention, she swallowed the wrong one.
At first, she thought she would immediately throw it back up. But nothing happened.
Then panic hit.
Desperate to figure out if the AirPod was really inside her body, Bellmer opened Apple’s “Find My AirPods” feature on her iPhone. To her shock, the device was still connected — and she could faintly hear sounds coming from inside her own stomach.
The situation became even stranger moments later.
While trying to explain what happened, she accidentally sent one of her friends a voice memo that had apparently been recorded from inside her digestive tract. The muffled, distorted audio sounded almost unreal, and she later shared the entire experience online while crying and laughing in disbelief.
Her TikTok videos quickly exploded across social media, racking up millions of views as people around the world reacted with a mix of horror, disbelief, and dark humor.
Many viewers mocked the story at first, asking how someone could possibly confuse a pill with an AirPod. But others pointed out that prescription-strength 800mg ibuprofen tablets are unusually large, oval-shaped, and surprisingly similar in size to an AirPod when grabbing things in the dark while exhausted.
Fortunately, the story did not end in tragedy.
According to Bellmer, doctors monitored the situation and confirmed through X-rays that the AirPod eventually passed naturally a few days later. She later joked online that she definitely would not be using that earbud ever again.
But behind the viral jokes was something doctors considered genuinely dangerous.
Safety experts have repeatedly warned that swallowed wireless earbuds can become serious medical emergencies because of the lithium batteries inside them. If damaged or lodged in the body, those batteries can cause severe internal burns and tissue damage in only a matter of hours.
That part of the story was mostly ignored while the internet turned the incident into a meme.
Bellmer got lucky.
What millions of people laughed at online could easily have become a life-threatening emergency if the battery had ruptured or become stuck inside her digestive system.
