A routine decision turned into a nightmare no one could have imagined.
Gabriel Batista, a 59-year-old businessman, attempted to cross a flooded bridge near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga — trying to reach his hotel just on the other side.
He never made it.
Within seconds, violent floodwaters dragged his vehicle off the bridge and into the dark currents of the Komati River — a river feared for one reason above all: crocodiles.
Then… silence.
No wreck. No body. No sign of life.
For nearly a week, search teams scanned the river, knowing exactly what they were up against — one of the most predator-dense waterways in the region.
Then something disturbing appeared.
A drone captured footage of a massive crocodile — nearly 600kg — lying motionless on a small island. Its stomach was grotesquely swollen. Not normal. Not natural.
Investigators didn’t hesitate.
They knew.
Permission was granted. The animal was shot.
What followed felt like something out of a horror film.
Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter was strapped into a harness and lowered from a helicopter, hanging mid-air over crocodile-infested water, tasked with securing the massive carcass below.
The crocodile was transported to Kruger National Park.
Then came the moment no one was ready for.
When they cut it open… they found a human finger.
Still wearing a ring.
Believed to belong to Batista.
But what truly shook investigators wasn’t just that.
It was what else came out.
Six more pairs of shoes.
Different sizes. Different styles. Slippers. Sneakers. Sandals. Even high heels.
None of them his.
Crocodiles don’t digest rubber or plastic — meaning everything this animal had ever swallowed… was still inside.
Each pair of shoes now raises a terrifying question:
How many others disappeared here… without a trace?
Authorities have launched a wider investigation, attempting to match the items to unsolved missing persons cases.
DNA testing is still ongoing to officially confirm Batista’s identity.
His family, who waited by the river the entire time, has asked for silence until results come back. They described the ordeal as something no family should ever experience.
Officials are now issuing a blunt warning.
Stay away from that bridge.
It has already taken lives before.
And it may have been hiding far more than anyone realized.
