Chanel Just Unveiled a “Half Shoe”… And People Are Calling It the Most Ridiculous Trend Yet

High fashion just crossed a line — and the internet isn’t letting it slide.

At its Cruise 2027 runway show in Biarritz, France, Chanel introduced one of the most talked-about designs of the year.

A sandal that barely exists.

The piece, created by Creative Director Matthieu Blazy, is being described as a “barefoot heel cap” — essentially a minimalist block heel attached to the foot with two thin ankle straps.

No sole.

No toe support.

Nothing covers the front of the foot at all.

Just… a heel.

Even inside Chanel, the idea raised eyebrows.

Blazy admitted that members of his own team questioned the design. At one point, he was told it might be “too much.” Instead of backing down, he leaned in — drawing inspiration from a chaotic seashore image and pushing the concept forward.

The result?

A shoe that doesn’t really function like one.

The runway show itself was packed with A-list names, including Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton, A$AP Rocky, Michaela Coel, and Sofia Coppola — all gathered as Chanel paid tribute to Biarritz, the city where Gabrielle Chanel opened her couture house back in 1915.

But none of that mattered once the shoe hit the runway.

It instantly took over the conversation.

Fashion outlets like Vogue and Elle framed it as bold, experimental, even “intentionally incomplete.” A piece designed more as an idea than a product.

Online?

Completely different reaction.

People mocked it. Questioned it. Turned it into memes within hours.

Some called it a “recession indicator.” Others joked it wasn’t even a real shoe. One viral comment dared someone to wear it on the New York City subway and show what their feet looked like after.

And honestly — that’s the point.

Chanel didn’t just release footwear.

They released a conversation.

Because in high fashion, the goal isn’t always to sell something you’ll wear.

Sometimes, it’s to create something you can’t ignore.
