Robert De Niro’s 4-Word Response to His Daughter Coming Out Is Breaking the Internet

Robert De Niro has seven children. When his daughter Airyn recently came out publicly as a transgender woman, he had just four words for anyone who had a problem with it: “I don’t know what the big deal is.”

The 81-year-old actor issued a statement that cut through all the noise. “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I love all my children.” Short, simple, and completely unconditional.

Airyn, 29, gave her first public interview to Them magazine in April 2025, opening up about starting hormone therapy in November last year. She described herself as a late bloomer who spent most of her life feeling like she was too much of something and never enough of something else. Too big, not skinny enough. Not Black enough, not white enough. It was seeing transgender women living openly and confidently on social media that finally made her think — maybe it is not too late for me.

What makes her story even more compelling is how it became public. Paparazzi caught her visiting her father at a hotel in March and the tabloids ran a mocking headline about his “nepo baby son’s shock transformation.” Airyn responded by sitting down for a cover interview and telling her story on her own terms.

She is now studying to become a mental health counselor, wants to be a model and actress, and hopes to be an inspiration for Black, queer women who do not fit the industry’s narrow idea of beauty.
As for her father, he did not stop at a statement. He offered to go with her to her hormone appointments.

That is what unconditional love looks like.
