Trump Reaffirms Backing of Lindsey Graham Ahead of GOP Primary

President Donald J. Trump has doubled down on his support for Sen. Lindsey Graham, endorsing the longtime Republican incumbent once again while launching a sharp attack on his primary challenger, Mark Lynch.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Graham’s performance and urged Republican voters in South Carolina to back him in the upcoming primary. The president described Graham as an effective lawmaker who delivers results, writing that he “gets the job done” and remains a strong asset for the Republican Party.

At the same time, Trump took direct aim at Lynch, using unusually blunt language to criticize the challenger. He labeled Lynch a “lunatic” and warned that his candidacy would be damaging to Republicans if he were to win the nomination. Trump also highlighted Lynch’s support for Rep. Thomas Massie, whom Trump has previously criticized, tying Lynch to what he framed as problematic positions within the party.

“Senator Lindsey Graham is doing a fantastic job,” Trump wrote. “He is running against a lunatic… [who] would be a disaster for the Republican Party.”

Trump’s endorsement carries significant weight in South Carolina, a state where he remains highly popular among Republican voters. His backing is widely seen as a major advantage for Graham, who has at times faced skepticism from segments of the conservative base despite maintaining a close alliance with Trump in recent years.

The race, however, is drawing increased attention as early polling suggests a potentially competitive dynamic. Surveys cited in recent reports show Graham leading but below the critical 50 percent threshold, with Lynch gaining support among conservative voters and a large share of the electorate still undecided.

One polling memo indicated that Lynch had climbed to around 21 percent support, while Graham was at approximately 41 percent, signaling room for movement as the campaign progresses. Analysts note that incumbents polling below 50 percent in primaries can be vulnerable if challengers consolidate opposition support.

Lynch has positioned himself as a populist alternative to Graham, emphasizing alignment with “America First” policies and appealing to voters who want a more confrontational approach to Washington. He has criticized Graham’s record and argued that the senator does not fully represent the priorities of pro-Trump conservatives.

In previous remarks, Lynch suggested that Trump’s endorsement might not be enough to secure Graham’s reelection, pointing to frustration among voters with long-serving incumbents.

“We all know that Trump needs some things out of Lindsey,” Lynch said in an earlier interview. “But that endorsement won’t save him this time.”

The contest reflects broader tensions within the Republican Party between establishment figures and insurgent challengers. Graham, who has served in the Senate for over two decades, is a well-known figure in national politics and has played a prominent role in areas such as foreign policy and judicial confirmations.

At the same time, he has occasionally drawn criticism from more hardline conservatives, particularly earlier in Trump’s political rise. Although Graham later became one of Trump’s closest allies in the Senate, some voters continue to question his consistency.

Trump’s decision to firmly back Graham suggests he is prioritizing loyalty and experience in this race, rather than supporting a challenger aligned with the party’s outsider wing. That approach contrasts with other primaries where Trump has endorsed candidates seeking to unseat incumbents.

The South Carolina race is expected to be a key test of Trump’s influence heading into the 2026 midterms. His endorsements have historically carried significant sway in Republican primaries, but outcomes have varied depending on local dynamics and candidate strength.

With months remaining before the election, both campaigns are likely to intensify their efforts to win over undecided voters. Fundraising, messaging, and additional endorsements could all play a decisive role in shaping the final outcome.
