On February 19, 1984, 11-year-old Jody Plauché left home with someone his family trusted — his karate instructor, Jeff Doucet.
But it wasn’t a short drive.
Doucet dyed the boy’s hair black, took him across state lines to California, and held him there for ten days — abusing him while his family desperately searched.
When police finally found Jody, they arrested Doucet and arranged to bring him back to Louisiana.
What happened next would be captured on live television — and would shock the nation.
A Father Waiting
At Baton Rouge Airport, a man stood quietly near a payphone.
Baseball cap. Sunglasses. Calm.
It was Gary Plauché — Jody’s father.
He had a .38 revolver hidden in his boot.
As officers escorted Doucet through the terminal, Gary stepped forward.
From just a few feet away, he raised the gun…
…and fired a single shot into Doucet’s head.
Then, as if nothing had happened, he turned back to the phone and hung up.
The entire moment was caught on camera.
Doucet died the next day.
What Came After
Gary Plauché was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
But the court’s decision stunned many.
He received:
- A suspended sentence
- Five years probation
- No prison time
He never spent a single day behind bars.
The Part Most People Don’t Know
At first, Jody was angry.
“I didn’t want him dead. I just wanted him to stop.”
Then he revealed something even more heartbreaking.
He had known about the abuse for months — but never told anyone.
Why?
Because his father had always said:
“If anyone ever touches my kid — I’ll kill him.”
Jody believed him.
So he stayed silent.
“That’s exactly what he ended up doing… and that’s exactly why I couldn’t tell anybody.”
Years Later
Jody Plauché went on to become a child safety advocate and even wrote a book titled “Why, Gary, Why?”
In 2024, he called his father:
“The greatest dad of all time.”
Gary Plauché was asked many times if he regretted what he did.
His answer never changed.
“Hell no.”
