Doctors in the operating room weren’t prepared for what they were about to see.
When Shelby Martin of Dixon, Tennessee, went in for her third C-section, everything seemed routine — until the moment her baby was delivered.
The room went silent.
Then came gasps.
Her son, Cassian, was born on July 29 at Tristar Centennial Women’s Hospital in Nashville, weighing an astonishing 12 pounds, 14 ounces — nearly double the size of an average newborn and one of the largest babies ever delivered at the hospital.
Even before the birth, Shelby knew something felt different.
This pregnancy brought intense pain she had never experienced before. At one point, her physical therapist explained the cause: the baby’s size was so extreme that it was actually pushing her hip joint out of place.
At 36 weeks, doctors confirmed the baby was already measuring around 10 pounds.
They scheduled an early C-section.
Still, no one expected this.
For context, most full-term babies weigh between 6 and 9 pounds.
Cassian arrived at nearly 13.
Healthy. Loud. And already breaking records.
But the story doesn’t end there.
What makes this moment even more powerful is the timing.
Exactly one year earlier, Shelby had lost a baby on her birthday.
Now, on that same date, she welcomed Cassian into the world.
The day that once marked loss… became something completely different.
A new beginning.
