It was just after noon on February 11, 2019.
Leiliane Rafael da Silva, 28, was riding on a motorcycle with her husband along the Anhanguera Highway in São Paulo when a helicopter fell out of the sky directly in front of them.
The aircraft — a Bell 206B carrying renowned journalist Ricardo Boechat and pilot Ronaldo Quattrucci — had suffered a malfunction and attempted an emergency landing on the crowded highway. A truck driven by João Adroaldo Tomackeves had no time to stop. The collision was catastrophic. The helicopter exploded into flames on impact.
Boechat and the pilot were killed instantly.
The truck driver was alive — but trapped in the crushed, burning cab with fire spreading fast.
Leiliane watched it happen from meters away.
She got off the bike.
And she ran toward it.
Around her, men stood watching. Some had already pulled out their phones to film. Nobody moved to help.
Leiliane didn’t stop to think about that. She reached the totaled truck cab and started pulling at the wreckage with her bare hands — trying to tear open the door, flames growing behind her, the constant threat of a second explosion in the air.
She couldn’t get the door open.

Leiliane had been diagnosed just four months earlier with arteriovenous malformation — a rare, serious brain condition caused by abnormal connections between arteries and veins in the brain. It causes convulsions, chronic headaches, and hemorrhage. Her doctors had told her explicitly: no stress, no physical exertion, no strong emotions. Any of these could trigger a catastrophic event in her brain.
She knew this when she ran toward the fire.
She ran anyway.
So she and her husband pulled João out through the windshield instead.
He survived.
Brazilian illustrator Angelo France drew her as Wonder Woman — the image went viral across the world. “Real heroes exist,” he wrote. “A strong, brave woman who risked her life while all the men around her only cared about filming.”
