President Trump made it crystal clear Friday night: voter ID is coming — with or without Congress.
In a blunt announcement, Trump said he will pursue an executive order to enforce strict voter identification requirements nationwide, pledging the policy will be in place for the 2026 midterms regardless of what happens to the SAVE America Act on Capitol Hill.
The SAVE America Act just picked up a meaningful boost, with Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) signaling her support — bringing the total to 50 votes. That’s movement. But let’s be honest: 50 votes isn’t 60, and breaking a filibuster still looks like a steep climb, even with a 50+1 scenario and Vice President JD Vance available for a tiebreaker.
“The Democrats refuse to vote for Voter I.D., or Citizenship. The reason is very simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social media platform. “This was not what our Founders desired.”
He promised to develop a legal argument that he will present to the American people soon.
“There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!” he pledged.
In a fiery follow-up, President Trump tore into Democrats for opposing what he described as a commonsense reform backed by a broad majority of Americans across party lines.
He accused Democratic leaders of deliberately obstructing measures designed to secure elections, calling them “horrible, disingenuous cheaters” and framing their resistance as politically motivated rather than policy-based.
He also implored Republicans to embrace the issue.
“Republicans must put this at the top of every speech — It is a CAN’T MISS FOR RE-ELECTION IN THE MIDTERMS, AND BEYOND!” Trump insisted.
“This is an issue that must be fought, and must be fought, NOW! If we can’t get it through Congress, there are Legal reasons why this SCAM is not permitted,” his post continued. “I will be presenting them shortly, in the form of an Executive Order.”
Already anticipating the legal firestorm such an order would trigger, President Trump said he hopes the Supreme Court evaluates it through the broader goal of safeguarding the nation by ensuring secure elections.
He argued that voter ID is a foundational protection — not a partisan weapon — and warned that without stricter safeguards, the integrity of the 2026 midterms could be compromised. Trump went further, outlining what he believes would follow if Democrats were to secure sweeping victories, and it frighten all of us.
“These Corrupt and Deranged Democrats, if they ever gain power, will not only be adding two States to our roster of 50, with all of the baggage thereto, but will also PACK THE COURT with a total of 21 Supreme Court Justices, THEIR DREAM, which they will submit easily and rapidly when they immediately move to terminate the Filibuster, probably in their first week, or sooner,” Trump said.
“Our Country will never be the same if they allow these demented and evil people to knowingly, and happily, destroy it,” he added.
Can’t disagree with any of that. Republicans like to ‘play by the rules’ but today’s Democrats ‘play to win.’
Voter ID isn’t some fringe idea — it’s mainstream. Poll after poll shows broad public support, cutting across party, racial, and demographic lines.
Despite arguments from Democratic leaders that stricter identification requirements could disproportionately burden minorities or women, surveys consistently indicate strong backing for the policy among those same groups.
According to a Pew Research survey conducted last summer, 83% of Americans support requiring voters to show a government-issued photo ID in order to cast a ballot. That includes 95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats. Only 16% of respondents said they oppose such a requirement.
“The bottom line is this: Voter ID is NOT controversial in this country. A photo ID to vote is NOT controversial in this country. It is not controversial by party, and it is not controversial by race,” CNN data cruncher Harry Enten said earlier this week. “The vast majority of Americans agree.”
In a functioning Congress, a bill like the SAVE America Act would move swiftly through both chambers and land on the President’s desk without drama. But no. It’s being blocked by Democrats who aid and abet rampant voter fraud and some Republicans who left their backbones at home.
This issue is one of those rare political lay-ups – like getting rid of Daylight Savings Time.
But then, we can’t even get Congress to do that, either.
