President Donald Trump has called for a new census, another of his many policy shifts that have sent Democrats off the deep end. But much to their chagrin, a recent poll shows most voters back his idea.

According to a Rasmussen Reports survey released this week, 57% of likely voters support Trump’s proposal to conduct a new census to more accurately determine congressional representation. That includes 36% who “strongly approve.”

Meanwhile, 34% oppose the idea, with 24% saying they “strongly disapprove.” Trump wants illegal immigrants out of the census count, and 52% of likely voters agree with him (36% disagree and 11% are not sure).

“Among voters who don’t think illegal immigrants should be counted in the census, 74% approve of Trump’s decision to order a new census: 83% of Republicans, 43% of Democrats and 49% of voters not affiliated with either major party at least somewhat approve of Trump ordering a new census,” according to Rasmussen’s analysis.

“Nearly half (49%) of Democrats believe the census should count illegal immigrants, but solid majorities of both Republicans (65%) and unaffiliated voters (57%) say illegal immigrants shouldn’t be counted.

“A majority (52%) of those who voted for Kamala Harris in last year’s presidential election think the census should count illegal immigrants, while 70% of Trump voters say illegal immigrants shouldn’t be counted.”
