Dan Bongino Returns to FBI Role Amid Epstein Case Tensions; JD Vance Steps In as Mediator

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino returned to his post on Monday after internal tensions within the Department of Justice raised questions about his future. Bongino reportedly took a personal day on Friday following a dispute with Attorney General Pam Bondi over the handling of the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein investigation, sources told CNN.

While Bongino is back at work, uncertainty remains over his position following what has been described as a “heated disagreement” concerning transparency in the Epstein case. The tension comes as the FBI and DOJ recently delivered a summary review of the case involving Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 under controversial circumstances.

The dispute has created a visible divide within Trump’s political base. Some MAGA-aligned supporters have expressed support for Bongino and criticized Bondi for what they see as a lack of openness regarding Epstein’s alleged network. Bondi had previously stated in a February interview with Fox News that the “client list” linked to Epstein was in her possession for review—sparking calls from some within the movement for her resignation instead.

President Trump has reportedly urged restraint, hoping the matter can be resolved without further disruption within his administration.

Meanwhile, Senator JD Vance (R-OH) is said to be playing a behind-the-scenes mediator role, encouraging both sides to de-escalate tensions and remain focused on the integrity of the investigation. Vance, a rising figure in conservative politics, has called for unity in addressing the sensitive case while ensuring the public receives truthful answers.

Before joining the FBI under Trump’s leadership, Bongino had publicly voiced concerns over how authorities handled the Epstein investigation and what he believed was a lack of full disclosure. His return to work signals a temporary easing of tensions, but observers say the situation is far from settled.

In a related development, Epstein’s former legal team has reiterated that Donald Trump is not included on the list of individuals linked to Epstein’s alleged trafficking activities, aiming to shut down ongoing speculation.
