California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom was shredded on social media following an appearance on a late-night show this week after using more politically inflammatory language against the Trump administration in the wake of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Appearing with left-wing host Stephen Colbert, whose ratings-challenged show has been canceled by CBS, Newsom called the situation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents doing their jobs a “Code Red” situation, while suggesting that people push back with violence.
Newsom’s remarks came on the heels of legislation he signed that was passed by the Democratic supermajorities in the state legislature banning, among other things, ICE agents from wearing masks to protect their identities.
They also come amid a growing rash of shootings at ICE facilities and attacks on immigration and federal law enforcement officials for months as he and other Democrats continue to describe Trump administration officials and federal officers as “Nazis” and members of the “Gestapo,” which was Adolph Hitler’s secret police.
“I fear that we will not have an election in 2028,” Newsom incredulously told Colbert on Tuesday. “I really mean that. At the core of my soul unless we wake up to the ‘Code Red,’ what’s happening in this country.”
WATCH (at the 7:30 mark):
A day later, another ICE detention facility – this one in Dallas, Texas – was attacked by gunfire from a radicalized young leftist who committed suicide after wounding two and killing one illegal alien. Federal investigators discovered ammunition belonging to the shooter scrawled with the words “ANTI-ICE.”
Newsom’s remarks drew heavy criticism online.
“For a bunch of people that like to call everyone ‘Nazis,’ they sure do act like Nazis,” one user responded.
“There have been so many defections from the Democrat party all that will be remaining will be extreme in their views. Very dangerous,” said another.
“Only the Democrats would go to war in their own country against the ppl of their country. For ppl from other countries. That is some messed up stuff,” another user wrote.
“Using language to incite rebellion. Sedition / Conduct or language inciting rebellion against the authority of a state,” another user noted.
“Gavin Newsom should face accountability of some sort,” yet another opined.
In his Wednesday monologue, Fox News host Jesse Watters pointed out several examples of leftist violence against Republicans and the Trump administration in general, while also listing a number of examples of Democratic politicians either denying the attacks are occurring or continuing to use violent, inflammatory rhetoric.
Vice President JD Vance on Thursday vehemently accused Democrats and the “left-wing media” — singling out Newsom — of misrepresenting the work of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arguing that such rhetoric fuels political violence like the deadly shooting at an ICE facility in Texas this week.
“Here is what happens when Democrats, like Gavin Newsom did, say that these people are part of an authoritarian government,” Vance said, while delivering a speech in North Carolina. “When the left-wing media lies about what they’re doing, when they lie about who they’re arresting, when they lie about the actual job of law enforcement, what they’re doing is encouraging crazy people to go and commit violence.”
“When democratic politicians encourage doxing, when they encourage us to unmask ICE enforcement officers, what do you think is going to happen?” Vance asked.
He added: “You don’t have to agree with my immigration policies, you don’t have to agree with Donald Trump’s immigration policies. But if your political rhetoric encourages violence against our law enforcement, you can go straight to hell and you have no place in the political conversation of the United States of America.”
