Prior to President Trump’s reelection last fall, there was no more a polarizing left-wing figure involved in the many ridiculous and politically motivated prosecutions against him than New York Attorney General Letitia James, who made persecuting the then-former president the central theme of her entire campaign. So it is of no greater satisfaction to the tens of millions of Trump supporters to now see her being served up a huge dose of her own lawfare medicine — by the Trump administration, no less.
You may recall that James—who famously declared that “no one is above the law” while pursuing legal action against Trump—now faces a federal criminal referral over alleged mortgage fraud, reports noted earlier this month. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte sent the referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy AG Todd Blanche, accusing James of falsifying records to obtain home loans for a Virginia property she claimed as her “principal residence” in 2023—while still serving as a New York state prosecutor.
The alleged misconduct took place in late August 2023, just weeks before James launched her civil fraud trial against the Trump Organization, which ultimately resulted in a $454 million judgment, the New York Post reported. Now, James has found herself at the center of a brand-new ethics complaint, compliments of America First Legal, a group founded by Trump loyalists for the purpose of holding left-wing figures like James to account.
“For a state prosecutor who has maligned the President of the United States for political gain, public accountability will serve as a cure to Letitia James’ endless lawfare and abuse of power,” AFL Vice President Dan Epstein said in a statement to Fox News Digital. A complaint has been filed with the New York State Unified Court System’s Committee on Professional Standards, which is responsible for handling disciplinary matters for attorneys based in the Albany region. The complaint requests that the attorney grievance committee investigate James due to allegations of mortgage fraud made against her earlier this month by the FHFA.
“If what Director Pulte uncovered is true, then we have a sitting state Attorney General who made false certifications to the United States in return for federal benefits,” Epstein said. According to the AFL’s complaint, James breached the New York State Bar Association’s professional conduct rules, which forbid lawyers from engaging in illegal acts that undermine their integrity and from any dishonest, fraudulent, deceitful, or misleading behavior—even if not technically unlawful.
“I’m always amazed at the rank hypocrisy of politicians who are quick to accuse others of what they’re guilty of doing themselves,” Fox News legal analyst Greg Jarrett said. “James famously intoned to Trump that ‘no one is above the law’ and that he was ultimately responsible legally for documents prepared by others. Unlike Trump, James is a lawyer. She knew or should have known, better than a lay person, that those documents were inaccurate and apparently false. She’s on record stating that accuracy in such financial records is essential and must be strictly enforced.”
He’s right, of course. But even more to the point is that James is now facing some serious allegations — much more serious and far more legitimate than what she charged — and convicted — Trump of doing. It’s not clear how this will play out in far-left New York regarding the ethics complaint, but you can rest assured that if the Trump administration finds that James played fast and loose with the truth regarding her properties, the payback is gonna be sweet.
