Until she came of age, the girl lived in her parents’ apartment, where every day was like a struggle for survival. The family could not boast of prosperity: her mother drove a tram, and her father was forced to leave work due to illness.
The income was barely enough for the bare necessities – modest food and clothing without frills.
After school, when other children were playing in the yard, the girl posted announcements at bus stops, handed out leaflets, and later helped in a small shop owned by family friends.
One day, looking at the peeling walls of their apartment, the girl promised herself: someday she would do some renovations here so that her parents would feel comfortable.
The only ticket to a new life was education. She studied hard, pored over books at night, and, having scored high on her exams, entered a university in another city.
At the age of eighteen she left her home, taking with her only a couple of suitcases.
Studying was hard, but it was even harder to combine it with part-time jobs. She worked in a cafe, took on small orders on the Internet, helped with paperwork – just to earn money.
Almost a year and a half of hard work, and now, finally, in front of her lay a sum sufficient for the repairs.
But there was no money for hired workers, so the family took on the job themselves. In the evenings, they cleaned the walls of old wallpaper, painted the radiators, and carefully selected new curtains.
The old floors were covered with laminate, the sofas were cleaned by a special service, and the only work for professionals was stretching the ceilings.
Most of the building materials were bought at sales and on special offers – every penny saved brought them closer to their dream.
The holidays flew by and they only managed to tidy up one room, but that was just the beginning. Soon the girl planned to tackle the kitchen and bathroom so that her parents’ house would be completely transformed.
